William Rainey Harper

William Rainey Harper (1856 – 1906) was a leading American academic innovator of the late 19th and early 20th century. Harper helped to establish both the University of Chicago and Bradley University, and he served as the first presidents of both institutions. In addition to encouraging the establishment for the first departments of Egyptology and Sociology in the United States, Harper was also instrumental in the establishment of the University of Chicago Press.
