In his previous work, Unfamiliar Journeys, photographer Alan McKernan took us on an unconventional excursion through the ever-changing Liverpool cityscape. Continuing his documentary quest, Unfamiliar Journeys Continued revisits some of the scenes of his earlier work in order to record further changes. Including previously undocumented sites, and accompanied by commentary from architectural historian Matthew Whitfield, McKernan’s otherworldly images leave the viewer feeling vaguely unnerved—until she realizes that there are no people in his vision of the city. Noteworthy for their unusual viewpoints and the stark pattern of shadows caught on black-and-white silver-based film, the images featured in this collection make even the familiar feel distant—capturing a city both endlessly changing and eerily out of time.
