One of Ireland’s most abidingly controversial political figures, Seán MacBride (1904–88) was a youthful participant in the Irish Revolution and an active member of the Irish Republican Army, rising through the ranks to occupy a leadership position for fifteen years.

Seán MacBride is the first book to focus exclusively on MacBride’s republican activities, on which his controversial reputation in Irish and British political circles rests. With extensive use of recently released archival material, including Department of Justice records and Bureau of Military History witness statements, this book combines a biographical focus with wider assessments of the important themes, including the persistence of republican opposition to the state after the Civil War and Ireland’s ambiguous experience of World War II.

Eunan O’Halpin, Trinity College Dublin

“An extremely interesting biographical study which skillfully paints a credible portrait of a complex and elusive character.”

Irish Times

"Nic Dháibhéid’s book charts MacBride's life, tracing with a fine, forensic touch his precocious involvement in the republican struggle. What emerges is distinctly new. Most recent biographical treatments have taken a credulous view of MacBride’s own patchy memoir, and have been stymied by his secretive approach to his own archives; Nic Dhábhéid has amplified the picture by dedicated sleuthing in the Bureau of Military History witness statements and various government papers, as well as by an approach that is fair-minded if on occasion astringent."

Ciara Meehan | Irish Literary Supplement
Seán MacBride: A Republican Life is a welcome addition to the literature on twentieth-century Ireland in general and MacBride in particular. It makes a significant contribution to our understanding of his early years. The book is also essential reading for anyone interested in the revolutionary period and the IRA’s relationship with the new state after independence.”
