Submitting a book proposal to the editors

What to submit: Authors wishing to present a book proposal should write to one of the editors listed in the section below with a letter of introduction, curriculum vitae, table of contents, and a brief prospectus including a description of the work and its intended audience, expected length and number of illustrations, and information on the schedule for completion of the manuscript. Authors may include a sample chapter, but complete manuscripts should not be sent unless invited. If you are not sure which editor should consider your work, please write to one of our editorial directors, whose names are also listed. Please do not send your submission to more than one editor.

Books we do not publish: We generally do not publish work outside the areas listed with the editors’ names below. We do not normally publish unrevised dissertations, conference proceedings, or Festschriften. With extremely rare exceptions, we do not publish original fiction (our fiction program consists of fiction in translation and reprints of classic novels). We do not consider uninvited poetry submissions.

Unsolicited material: While we welcome your submissions, the University of Chicago Press is not responsible for any unsolicited manuscripts, photos, or artwork. It is not our policy to return proposals, so please do not send originals.

Prospective authors are encouraged to consult William P. Germano's Getting It Published, 2nd Edition: A Guide for Scholars and Anyone Else Serious about Serious Books

Please send your proposal to the relevant acquisitions editor or editorial director at the address below, or via email.
