This lavishly illustrated catalog accompanies the first exhibition from the permanent collection at Brigham Young University's Museum of Art. The book highlights seventy-three of the finest American paintings from that collection, including works by such prominent artists as Benjamin West, George Catlin, Asher B. Durand, George Inness, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, Frederic Church, J. Alden Weir, and Childe Hassam. Several paintings are representative of the Hudson River School and American impressionism.

Each painting is reproduced in full color and accompanied by informative and provocative text that places the work within the artist's oeuvre as well as within a larger historical and cultural framework. The result is a fascinating reading of individual works of art as indicators of a particular time within 150 years of American history.
