This book considers ethnic boundaries in the context of European integration from the perspective of European ethnology. Comparing three regions in the EU where state boundaries divide ethnic regions, it examines the implications of political culture in these regions for European unity, and the impacts of the integration process at the local and regional level. This analysis is placed in a wider context of ethnonationalism in Europe. Parallels are drawn between border conflicts and ethnic "frontiers" which are emerging as a result of labor mobility, and the significance of these phenomena in terms of European policy is discussed. A model analyzing the de-territorialization of cultural space is then used to develop different scenarios for a future Europe.
