The MacBride Principles

This new book marks the 25th anniversary of the 1984 MacBride Principles, which contained nine affirmative action proposals aimed at eliminating religious discrimination in the employment practices of U.S. corporations with subsidiaries in Northern Ireland. Vigorously opposed by successive U.S. Republican administrations, the Principles were met with tremendous opposition in Britain and motivated a massive nonviolent campaign by Irish America to achieve social justice in Northern Ireland. Using interviews with key personalities, as well as hitherto unpublished and inaccessible archival information, Kevin McNamara draws on his experience as a British Member of Parliament and a former shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to chronicle this struggle for equality.
