As the weather heats up, thousands of individuals across the United States will spend their time, energy, and money recreating the battles of the Civil War. From casual spectators to amateur historians they will immerse themselves in the experience of living and fighting in the 1860s—from the cuisine to the very stitches in their uniforms.
In Whistling Dixie, photographer Anderson Scott provides a fresh view of these latter-day Confederates, sharing moments at a series of reenactments leading up to the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Scott’s photographs convey the earnestness and enthusiasm of this subculture while exposing its idiosyncrasies and contradictions. Some capture the juxtaposition of modern and old while others reveal moments eerily unchanged from that infamous era. A lively introduction from Scott tells the story of his own experiences at the reenactments.
Anderson Scott is a photographer and lawyer from Atlanta, Georgia. Born and raised in the south, he received an MFA from Yale University.
