If you have received an honorarium from the Journal of Law and Economics or the Journal of Legal Studies within the past 12 months, we have your forms on file, and you do not need to resubmit them for us to process your honorarium.
If you have not received an honorarium from the Journal of Law and Economics or the Journal of Legal Studies within the past 12 months, please consult the instructions below for your particular status.

Current Employees of the University of Chicago
Employees of the Graduate School of Business or the Law School
We regret that we cannot pay honoraria to employees of the divisions sponsoring the Journal of Law and Economics (the Graduate School of Business and the Law School).
Employees of other Divisions or Schools
If you are an employee of the University of Chicago in a division other than the Graduate School of Business or the Law School, we are pleased to offer a complimentary three-year subscription for reading an initial submission and a complimentary one-year subscription for reading a revision of a paper you have previously reviewed. Please contact the managing editor to arrange for your subscription.
Past employees of the University of Chicago
If you have not been an employee of the University of Chicago within the past 12 months, and are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, click here.
If you have not been an employee of the University of Chicago within the past 12 months, and are a U.S. resident with a visa, click here.
If you have not been an employee of the University of Chicago within the past 12 months, and are a non-U.S. citizen residing outside of the United States, click here.
Illinois residents
If you were an employee of the University of Chicago within the past 12 months, and are no longer employed by the University of Chicago and live in Illinois, please download and complete the following forms:

Residing outside Illinois
If you were an employee of the University of Chicago within the past 12 months, and are no longer an employee of the University of Chicago and do not live in Illinois, please download and complete the following forms:
- I-9: Employment Eligibility Verification
- W-4: Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate
- your state's W-4

U.S. Government Employees
If you are a government employee who cannot accept cash honoraria, please contact the managing editor if you are able to accept a complimentary subscription instead.
U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents
If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States who has not received an honorarium from the JLE within the past 12 months, please download and complete the following form:
- W-9: Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification. Include the information on past University of Chicago employment and visa status if applicable.
Fax (773-702-0730), mail, or e-mail the completed form to the managing editor. If you have a green card, please include a photocopy of the front and back of it.
U.S. Residents with Visas
J1 visa
If you are in the United States on a J-1 visa, you must have prior written permission from your sponsoring institution. In addition, please complete the following forms:
- UPP192: The University of Chicago Alien Determination of Residency Form
- W-8BEN-I: Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding
Fax (773-702-0730), mail, or e-mail the completed forms to the managing editor. Please provide photocopies of the front and back of your I-94 card, your visa, and form DS-2019 (from your sponsoring institution).
H-1B or 0-1 visas
Please contact the managing editor if you are in the United States on the following visas: H-1B, O-1, or any other visa type not allowed to accept honoraria from an institution other than the sponsoring institution.
Visas other than J-1, H-1B, or 0-1
If you are in the United States on a visa (other than J-1, H-1B, or O-1), please download and complete the following forms:
- W-9: Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification
- UPP192: The University of Chicago Alien Determination of Residency Form
- 8233: Exemption from Withholding for Compensation for Independent (and Certain Dependent) Personal Services of a Nonresident Alien Individual (to claim tax treaty benefits). Include the information on past University of Chicago employment and visa status.

Non-U.S. Citizens Residing outside the United States
If you are not a U.S. citizen and are not living in the United States, please download and complete the following form:
