Each year, more than 600,000 students from around the world come to the United States and Canada to study. For many, the experience is as challenging as it is exciting. Far from home, they must adapt to a new culture, new university system, and in many cases, a new language. The process can be overwhelming, but as Charles Lipson’s Succeeding as an International Student in the United States and Canada assures us, it doesn’t have to be.

The First Ten Things You Should Do Here

  1. Arrange for housing.
  2. Meet with the international student adviser.
  3. Get your university ID and e-mail account.
  4. Set up a local cell-phone account.
  5. Get a Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) or its U.S. equivalent, a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
  6. Set up a local bank account.
  7. Establish utility accounts (electricity, heating, etc.) for your new apartment.
  8. Make a list of emergency telephone numbers.
  9. Apply for a credit card.
  10. Be a tourist before classes start.

In the book, you will find much more detailed information about each of these tasks, plus valuable ideas to help with your classes, labs, papers, and exams.
