Wave-rocked boats, stoic villagers, windswept vistas of the seashores: the paintings of Winslow Homer have long been iconic representations of American life and landscapes. Yet his works had a richer and deeper scope than many realize. Winslow Homer: Poet of the Sea opens up a new door in the scholarship on Winslow Homer's work as it investigates the integral role of the sea.
This catalog, which accompanies a spring 2006 exhibition at London's Dulwich Gallery and a subsequent summer exhibition at the Musée d'art Américain Giverny, explores how Homer mined the complexities of diverse environments—from seaside English towns to Bermuda to his native New England shores—for artistic subjects. Four distinguished contributors employ the visual theme of the sea to investigate Homer's uncompromising portrayals of human and natural worlds, arguing that Homer's seascapes must be reevaluated as not only exemplary works of American realism, but also visionary modern works.
At the heart of the volume are rich, color reproductions of Homer's paintings, which are set in their full biographical and historical contexts. A thought-provoking and compelling reassessment, Winslow Homer is an essential reference for all admirers of this American master.
