The University of Chicago Press online

The University of Chicago Press is the largest and one of the oldest of the American university presses. The Press was founded in 1892 as a division of the then newly-established University of Chicago. We publish books for academics as well as for general readers. We have published uncounted books in our history and currently have over 4000 titles in print with 250 to 300 new titles added each year. The Press also publishes more than 50 journals and our journals division has its own website. This is an overview of what you'll find on this website, the books division website:
Finding the books we publish:
Of course we like to interest general readers in some of the latest books we have published, so we keep an up-to-date page of our new and forthcoming books for general readers. All the books on that page have been published (or reprinted in paperback) within the past 12 months or so.
If you are interested in a particular subject area, the best place to start is with our list of subject-area catalogs. We build these catalogs by hand and try to keep them up-to-date, so you'll find our newest and best titles in a given subject area in these catalogs.
However, the catalogs built by hand do not include all the titles we publish in a given area, because there are just too darn many of them. So, if you're a scholar, or otherwise deeply interested in a field, go to the subject index of our complete catalog, after you've visited the subject catalog(s) in your field.
And if you think you still might be missing something, go to our book search utility and plug in some key terms.
If you are looking just for new books in a subject area you can use two search strategies:
(1) Go to our our advanced search page
and enter a subject term and the current or recent year. For example enter: 2000 and poetry .
(2) Go to the subject index of our complete catalog, pick the subject of your choice, and look for titles flagged "New."
If you want to keep abreast of new publications in any subject, we suggest you sign up for email notice of new works in your field of interest. We also have RSS feeds in some subject areas.
Some of our books are published in a series and we have a series index that gathers all the series titles together. If you enjoy a long scroll, we also have a browse page of all our titles.
Excerpts and features from our books:
We like to give you something to read while you're here. Each month we publish online several excerpts or other features drawn from our books. Our excerpts and etc. page lists the latest of these. We also have a list of older excerpts and features.
If you know one book that Chicago has published it is probably the Chicago Manual of Style. The Chicago Manual of Style Online has free content for writers and editors, plus the text of the Fifteenth Edition by annual subscription.
